Some business owners here pay lip service to safety rules and regulations. They comply with the legal minimum requirements – or in some cases do not even meet the minimum safety standards – but they do not truly care about their workers and their personal safety.
This is clearly a wrong attitude to take as every business owner should bear responsibility willingly for the safety of his staff. It is a core responsibility and one which he or she should not shy away from. However, apart from the social aspect of this, there are also clear business benefits in running a tight and safe ship.
By treating safety issues without due care, you run the risk of employees taking more time off with injury and sickness issues – time which costs you money. It also lowers the motivation and productivity levels.
If your business has a reputation for bad safety, word spreads and you will be unlikely to find high calibre and quality staff as they will work for more safety-conscious businesses.
You are also leaving yourself wide open to being sued if an accident happens which is caused by the lack of safety precautions in your workplace – this can cost big bucks, so money spent now on precautions and procedures could be a small investment to pay in the long run.
